Modernist hall in Okayama to be demolished – JAPAN PROPERTY CENTRAL K.K.

The modernist Okayama Civic Hall in Okayama City closed its doors at the end of last month as the city prepares for its demolition due to concerns over earthquake resistance.

Built in 1963, the octagonal shaped hall is clad is dark brown tile. Inside is even more spectacular, with a slanted ceiling, colored glass tile blocks, pre-cast and textured concrete walls, and original furniture from the 1960s. The interiors were designed by Katsuki Iwabuchi.

The hall was designed by architect Takeo Satō (1899-1972). Satō was considered a pioneer in architectural acoustic design and was the go-to architect for many of the public halls built across Japan. He also designed the Shinbashi Ekimae Building in Tokyo in 1966, which is also scheduled for redevelopment in the near future.

Adjoining the hall is a 4-story building containing various meeting rooms. The 4th floor was originally designed as a wedding reception floor.

The city council approved the budget for demolition in early 2022. Demolition plans were met with some opposition. The Chubu branch of the Architectural Institute of Japan submitted a written request to the Okayama City Mayor later that year seeking the preservation of the landmark building.
