Manchester Airport, the UK’s global gateway in the North, is experiencing an unprecedented surge in passenger numbers this summer.
July marked a historic milestone, with nearly 3.3 million travellers passing through, making it the airport’s busiest July ever and its second busiest month on record.
As the school summer holidays kicked off, families and vacationers flocked to popular destinations, setting the stage for an even busier August.
A Record-Setting July
The summer rush began in earnest last month, with Friday, July 25, shattering records as over 60,000 passengers departed in a single day—a first for the airport.
The busiest day overall, factoring in both arrivals and departures, was Thursday, July 31, when more than 113,000 travellers moved through the terminals.
These figures highlight Manchester Airport’s growing role as a key hub for holidaymakers and international travellers alike.
August is poised to surpass these numbers, with projections indicating it could be the airport’s busiest month ever. Friday, August 22, just before the bank holiday Monday, is expected to be the peak day, with 118,000 passengers set to fly.
To handle this influx, the airport has bolstered its workforce, particularly in security, ensuring a smooth experience for passengers.
In July, 98% of passengers cleared security in under 15 minutes, and nearly three-quarters waited less than five minutes, allowing more time to relax in the departure lounges.
Terminal 2 Opening
A major highlight of the summer was the opening of a new section of Terminal 2, the centerpiece of Manchester Airport’s ambitious £1.3 billion, decade-long transformation program.
The first phase, completed in 2021, doubled the terminal’s size with a state-of-the-art extension. Since then, the older section has undergone a complete overhaul to match the modern standards of the new build.
Earlier this year, a revamped check-in hall and security area opened, followed by a vibrant new departure lounge in July. This lounge features an array of new shops and dining options, including the airport’s own LEGO Store, Pandora, Rituals, and Joe and the Juice, among others.
Chris Woodroofe, Manchester Airport’s Managing Director, expressed pride in the airport’s role in connecting the North to the world.

Top Destinations and Future Plans
Holiday hotspots dominated July’s travel trends, with Palma de Mallorca leading the pack as over 116,000 passengers jetted off to the Balearic island.
Dublin, a key connecting hub, came in second with 96,426 travellers, followed closely by Antalya, Turkey, with 95,321 passengers.
Other popular short-haul destinations included Alicante, Amsterdam, Dalaman, Tenerife, and Malaga. For long-haul travel, Orlando, New York, and Toronto topped the list, while Dubai and Doha rounded out the top ten.
The transformation of Terminal 2 is nearing completion, with over 70% of Manchester Airport’s passengers already using the new facilities.
Terminal 1 is slated to close later this year as the project wraps up. The terminal will feature 13 new flexible aircraft stands and boarding gates, currently under construction.
A new passageway linking the security hall to the departure lounge will showcase a stunning chandelier installation, a nod to the iconic Venetian chandeliers that adorned Terminal 1 in the 1980s and 1990s.
