Delta Air Lines and JetZero Partner on Blended-Wing-Body Aircraft Development

Delta Air Lines is taking a bold leap, partnering with JetZero to develop a groundbreaking aircraft that promises to redefine commercial aviation.

This collaboration centers on JetZero’s innovative blended-wing-body (BWB) design. This is a revolutionary concept aiming to dramatically enhance fuel efficiency, and elevate passenger experiences.

As Delta commemorates a century of flight, this partnership underscores its focus on shaping the next era of aviation.

The alliance follows JetZero’s receipt of a substantial grant from the U.S. Air Force in 2023, funding the development of a full-scale demonstrator slated for its inaugural flight in 2027.

Delta’s invaluable operational expertise will be pivotal in translating this cutting-edge technology into a commercially viable reality.

“We remain focused on immediate actions to mitigate our carbon footprint. However, it’s imperative that we collaborate with visionary partners to develop transformative technologies. Initiatives like JetZero’s blended-wing-body aircraft address a substantial portion of future aviation emissions.”

JetZero’s integration into Delta’s Sustainable Skies Lab grants the startup access to the airline’s world-class talent and industry-leading operational resources.

This includes vital support in establishing the necessary maintenance and operational frameworks to accelerate the commercialization of the BWB airframe.

This design is projected to achieve up to a staggering 50% improvement in fuel efficiency. This figure is comparative to conventional tube-and-wing aircraft currently in service.

This partnership marks the fourth “revolutionary fleet” initiative outlined in Delta’s comprehensive Sustainability Roadmap. The plan was launched in 2023, detailing the airline’s transparent path to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Aircraft Interior Design


Delta will play a crucial role in shaping the interior design of these future aircraft. It will ensure an unparalleled customer and employee experience.

The BWB’s unique design, departing from the traditional cylindrical fuselage, opens up a world of possibilities for cabin innovation.

Passengers can anticipate enhanced features such as dedicated overhead bin space for each individual. The aircraft will have improved accessibility with wider seats and lavatories, and optimized cabin layouts with fewer rows.

Evolution of the Blended Wing Body


The BWB concept, initially explored by NASA and Stanford University in the 1990s, has been rigorously tested and validated for its safety and efficiency.

This revolutionary design, leveraging existing engine propulsion systems, will also be compatible with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) upon its entry into service.

The aviation industry has made significant strides in improving fuel efficiency since the dawn of commercial jet travel. Technological advancements have increased fleet fuel efficiency by 80% compared to 50 years ago.

Delta has further enhanced its fleet through modifications such as winglet installations and lightweight landing gear.

Additionally, Delta’s cross-divisional Carbon Council achieved a cumulative fuel saving of over 40 million gallons in 2024. This was achieved through operational optimizations, fleet enhancements, and weight reduction initiatives. However, the industry acknowledges the need for accelerated progress.

The U.S. Air Force grant, coupled with support from partners like Northrop Grumman and Scaled Composites, and ongoing collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

This reinforces the BWB design’s viability and potential for widespread adoption. Delta’s informal partnership with JetZero, initiated in 2021 during the startup’s grant application process, has been pivotal in shaping the commercialization strategy.
