Anguilla becomes more accessible with increased travel options

The British Overseas Territory of Anguilla in the eastern Caribbean, with its pristine shores and azure waters, is now more accessible than ever, thanks to expanded flight options and increased frequency.

In this guide, we’ll explore the convenient routes and services that make this an ideal destination for a winter escape.

American Airlines Paves the Way

Anguilla’s enhanced accessibility begins with American Airlines, breaking ground as the first carrier to introduce direct service from Miami International (MIA) to Anguilla (AXA).

Currently offering daily flights with double the service on Saturdays, the schedule is set to elevate to twice-daily from December 20, 2023, extending through the summer of 2024.

Connections to the UK and Canada further open up possibilities for seamless travel.

Airlift Expansion

Kenroy Herbert, Chairman of the Anguilla Tourist Board, expresses enthusiasm for the island’s expanded airlift, emphasizing it as a vote of confidence in Anguilla’s tourism product.

The commitment to enhancing access aligns with the broader strategy to position the nation as a year-round destination.

Blowing Point Ferry Terminal

Opened in January 2023, the new Blowing Point Ferry Terminal welcomes travelers arriving by private charter and public ferry.

This terminal serves as the primary entry point for visitors arriving via the Princess Juliana International Airport in St. Maarten (SXM). Notably, St. Maarten’s upgraded departure hall and expanded check-in hall enhance the overall travel experience.

Air or Sea From St. Maarten

From St. Maarten, visitors have two delightful options to reach Anguilla. The first is a short inter-island flight, a mere 7-minute journey that holds the title of the shortest international flight globally.

Alternatively, a 25-minute boat transfer from the Anguilla-St. Maarten Ferry Terminal (ASMFT) on the Dutch side.

Otherwise, a 30-minute public ferry ride from Marigot on the French side provides a scenic and relaxed journey, both concluding at the Blowing Point ferry terminal in Anguilla.

Services for the New York Metro Area

For those in the New York metro area, the Aurora Anguilla Resort & Golf Club offers charter service flights directly to Anguilla from the Westchester County Airport (HPN).

Operating from mid-December through April 2024, this service caters to both Aurora guests and other travelers seeking a convenient and swift route to the island.

UK Connections: British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and More

Travelers from the United Kingdom can reach Anguilla via British Airways or Virgin Atlantic, with services to Antigua followed by a brief inter-island flight transfer to Anguilla.

An alternative route includes KLM/Air France via Amsterdam/Paris to St. Maarten (SXM), with the option of a short boat transfer or flight.

Intra-regional Services

This winter season sees an expansion of intra-regional services, with new routes connecting Anguilla to Antigua and St. Barths.

Anguilla Air Services (AAS) operates scheduled flights between Anguilla (AXA) and Antigua (ANU) three times a week, providing essential connections for UK and Caribbean travelers.

Trans Anguilla Airways and Tradewind Aviation

Trans Anguilla Airways offers daily flights connecting the territory to St. Kitts, Nevis, Antigua, St. Eustatius, and St. Maarten. Tortola (BVI) and Virgin Gorda are also part of their scheduled services.

Tradewind Aviation, in collaboration with British Airways, offers interline booking between Antigua (ANU) and AXA from mid-January to early April, as well as scheduled services from St. Barths and San Juan (SJU) to Anguilla.

Private Charter Flights

For those seeking luxury and flexibility, private charter flights are available to neighboring islands through Anguilla Air Services and Trans Anguilla Airways. St. Martin, St. Barths, Antigua, St. Kitts & Nevis, Tortola (BVI), and Virgin Gorda are all within reach.

Upgrades at Clayton J Lloyd International Airport

Anguilla’s commitment to improving infrastructure is evident at Clayton J Lloyd International Airport. The ongoing expansion includes a new Cargo Facility scheduled to commence at the end of 2023.

Phase Two involves the construction of a new terminal set to begin in 2024, and the final stage includes a runway expansion to accommodate larger aircraft.
