Destiny 2 devs admit the game is “too complex” after years of feature creep

Bungie wants to make Destiny 2 less complicated as it moves past its tenth anniversary. After finishing the series’ first arc with The Final Shape, the devs admit that years of building on top of the sequel has made for a game that’s too “complex” for newcomers.

Is Destiny 2 too complicated?

After explaining how the studio aims to bring the game back to the original’s sense of mystery, game director Tyson Green explained the game’s complexities make picking a new activity a chore.

“Destiny is too complex,” Green said in a recent blog post. “With literally hundreds of activities, you practically need a PhD to decide what to play and how to get rewards you’re looking for.”

To address this, Bungie is revising the game’s UI in order to make everything clearer for players. Dubbed “The Portal”, players will have a new way to “make it easier for everyone to find and launch into great activities.”

“The Portal screen will also host consolidated and streamlined side objectives, like bounties or Seasonal Challenges. That aspect of the redesign is still a work in progress, but the primary goal is to greatly reduce the “chores” that need to be done before diving into an activity,” Bungie announced.

Missing activities

Not every activity will be present in the Destiny 2 Portal. Older activities, such as Gambit, will still be accessible from the Destinations screen, but they won’t be found in The Portal. However, as the game continues, new activities could be added or removed as time goes on.

With plummeting player counts, Bungie is also aiming to revise the rewards that come with activities found in The Portal.

“In past Destiny Seasons, only a narrow range of activities received updated rewards, leading to a narrow selection of activities worth playing,” Bungie said whilst promising to address the game’s lacklustre loot.
